bizarre - (adj.): very unusual or strange
  • Synonyms: unusual, strange, odd, extraordinary, exceptional, remarkable, freaky, weird
  • Antonyms: normal, typical, reasonable, usual
  • Origin: 1648, from the French word bizarre "odd, fantastic," originally "handsome, brave," from the Basque (from Northern Spain) word bizar "a beard" (French people thought that the bearded Spanish soldiers looked bizarre); alternative etymology traces it to the Italian word bizarre meaning "angry or fierce" from bizza  meaning "fit of anger."
  • Example: This word has a bizarre but interesting origin!
