defy - (v.): to refuse to obey a law or rule, or refuse to do what someone in authority tells you to do; to go against what someone else expects
  • Synonyms: challenge, dare, oppose, ignore, refuse, resist
  • Antonyms: obey, surrender, give in
  • Origin: 1300 L. dis- meaning "away" + fidus meaning "faithful." The meaning changed sometime in the 1300s from "be disloyal" to "challenge."
  • Example: Today in science, your challenge will be to devise a device that defies gravity!
What did you learn while trying to devise your gravity-defying device?

Defying gravity is HARD! How I defied gravity is put a paper clip on my hand, and use the magnet (make sure the MAGNET DOESN'T TOUCH!)

It was hard to devise how to make the paper clip defy the gravity using just a magnet,a piece of tape, and some string, but it was FUN once you figure it out!
