academic - (adj.)relating to school and learning, especially at a higher level
If a person is very academic, he is good at studying. If a word is academic, it is a good word for learning because it makes you sound smart!
- Synonyms: bookish, scholastic, intelligent
- Antonyms: untaught, ignorant
- Word family: academy, academics
- Origin: 1474, from the Greek word Akademeia meaning "grove of Akademos." Akademos was a legendary Athenian man from stories about the Trojan War (his name apparently means "of a silent district"), whose estate outside of Athens, was where Plato taught school. It took about 100 more years for this word to come to be used for any school or training place.
- Example: You have learned at least 161 academic vocabulary words this year. The fact that you use them is very impressive - WOOHOO!

Blogging has helped me by getting my academics in words and Reading because the blog is not only the fun of words, it's the words that make it fun. Words are fun, words are the stuff that comes out of peoples mouth. If we didn't have words we wouldn't be talking right now. Words help kids understand adults when they get older. I LOVE words because even if I forget them I can still use them. When you forget a word, you can remember it by hearing the word or looking in the notebook that you wrote in, when you were in 4th grade. Mrs. Brucker is the BEST 4th grade word teacher in the whole universe! Thank you Mrs. Brucker for the GREAT words that you taught us!
